FastMail.FM subscription-based?

They're not, you know, not exclusively — on the contrary, their free Guest account is the best free account currently available...

I can't really comment on their free service as I have only used it briefly. However I did sign up for their full member account. I wish I hadn't.
I was informed immediately on the next screen that my account could not be activated, and that my payment was successful. The email I was to contact as per that screen for assistance with my new account which could not be activated kept bouncing back my mails.

Extra time had to spent with my ISP to finally get mail through to them, however a reply has not been forthcoming. I have requested a refund now, as this does not look like a reliable and professional service. There are also many posts in the forum relating to lack of customer service.
So for free it might be great, but if you want to use their paid service, think twice.
